ISAES XI - 11th International Symposium on Antarctic Earth Sciences

10 - 16 July 2011, Edinburgh, Scotland, UK

The symposium will take place at the John McIntyre Conference Centre in Edinburgh, adjacent to Holyrood Park and the University of Edinburgh's Halls of Residence. Our ambition is to bring together scientists studying the different components of Polar Earth Science to exchange information and perspectives. As we come to terms with climate change, understanding the landscape and environmental response of the Polar regions, in particular the great Antarctic Ice Sheets, becomes ever more important. Study of geological archives, ice cores, and modern systems offers an unrivalled opportunity to reconstruct and understand the Earth's climatic variability - something which impacts on all countries and peoples of the world.

Sessions convened by members of the ACE community

International Polar Year (IPY) Conference - "From Knowledge to Action"

22 - 27 April 2012, Palais des Congrès, Montreal, Québec, Canada

The IPY 2012 Conference is the final event of International Polar Year 2007 - 2008, the largest international programme of interdisciplinary polar research ever undertaken. This conference will provide an opportunity to apply and disseminate the knowledge and scientific results from IPY from around the world and focus on next steps. Participants will consider ways to translate those new understandings into policy that will guide activities in and enhance stewardship of the polar regions.

The conference is aimed at polar scientists, policy makers and academics, government and industry representatives from around the world. An exciting programme will be offered featuring keynote speakers, international leaders, polar scientific experts and practitioners from the polar science and policy communities.

- ANTscape Workshop: Leeds 15-18 April 2009

ANTscape - ACE Subcommittee on Antarctic Paleotopographic maps

The purpose of ANTscape is to develop a set of around 6 paleotopographic base maps of Antarctica to represent key times in the last ~70 million years. The reconstructions, which may also include other paleogeographic data, are intended for use as inputs for the next generation of ice sheet-ice shelf models. The work is undertaken in support of the ACE mission to integrate geological data with climate-ocean-biosphere-lithosphere models, with the aim to understand the past and future behaviour of the Antarctic ice sheet. The ACE co-chairs for 2008-2012 are Carlota Escutia (U Granada, Spain) and Rob DeConto, (U Amherst, USA).

The aim of the workshop, which will be run by Christien Siddoway and Alan Haywood, is to develop the workplan for the project and to identify specific tasks to be achieved during Summer 2009; in order that preliminary results may be presented at the wider ACE community during the 1st ACE Symposium in Granada (7-11 September 2009, http://www.acegranada2009.com/)
